The Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) – The Most Fortified Border On Earth

DMZ is the most heavily fortified border on the planet, with over one million soldiers on both sides ready to pull the trigger on one another in a matter of hours. For all those in South Korea on business or vacation will be, this place is not to be missed.

Because the DMZ is the most heavily fortified border on the planet, with over one million soldiers on both sides ready to pull the trigger on one another in a matter of hours. The highest concentration of firepower lives together in this area, hopefully to be the last remnants of the Cold War. Well, who would in their right mind wants an area in which died more than 50 Americans, 1,000 South Koreans and countless North Koreans in skirmishes in the last 40 years to visit, and is still with mines, barbed wire and concrete tank bunkers littered? So if you’re looking for some action, then this is definitely the place for you.

All along the DMZ are locations where the North and South had to have disputes in the past, while at the same time there are conflicts could occur at any time. But that’s where the real excitement of the visit such a place as these lies. You know instantly that you do not eventually Museum, where you will be asked to fill in information release forms that your visit to “the entry into enemy territory and the possibility of injury of death as a direct result of hostile action triggers.” Every year around 180,000 tourists are bused from Seoul for a day in the clean air and vastness of the last vestiges of the Cold War. It is one of the most bizarre and fascinating places that you can achieve in a tour bus. Sounds funny, does not it? Panmunjeom
In the middle of the DMZ, is about an hour and half bus ride north of Seoul Panmunjeom and the Joint Security Area. Panmunjeom is the “truce village” where the armistice was signed in 1953 ending the Korean War and the division of the peninsula into North and South. Almost all tourists who come here are foreigners, because South Koreans have a special government permission to visit Panmunjeom. Many of the visitors are Americans, including some who fought in the Korean War, their families, history buffs or just backpackers trekking in Asia in search of a little catchy tourism.

Freedom Road
Once your tour bus leaves Seoul, start with the idea that things are a little different to get here. “Freedom Road (Jayooro),” the only way Panmunjeom is a major highway is divided, which is about 12 lanes across in some places. The median strip is solid and flat, just right to go for a wave of tanks and artillery to the north, to ward off an invasion. What are those strange little structures to almost every hill? Yes, these are machine-gun positions. The path stretches along the banks of the river Imjingang which is covered with a continuous eight-foot fence with barbed wire and dotted with hundreds lined with military watch posts, all occupied by a lonely soldier. The river itself is prevented by nets and spikes and other obstacles for the North Korean troops or vessels coming from the south filled. Huge illuminated signs with Korean characters are faced with the North Korean side of the river, advertises “Freedom” and “democracy”. Camp Bonifas Upon arrival, the bus is a set of control points, through the fences and barricades that the bus must be disconnected to and from tissues. Upon entering the Joint Security Area, visitors large banners and signs with the clearest and most concise expression of the situation will face “in front of them all.” The first stop is Camp Bonifas, a small collection of buildings that surround the south by triple coils of barbed wire only 440 meters from the DMZ. If it were not for the country heads and armed soldiers, could be the place look like a big boy scout camp. About 5,000 U.S. and South Korean soldiers are living in Bonifas and other bases near Panmunjeom. After unloading the bus, everyone is escorted to Ballinger Hall, where to place held a briefing and slide show to determine which Dos and Don’ts of the area. THE LIMIT
From this point on, tourists are in the DMZ under constant guard by UN soldiers. They keep the tourists go astray from the approved areas, but mainly they are there to protect the visitors from enemy attacks. In addition, make sure to photograph tourists only at authorized places, like almost all photography is prohibited here. First, along the way is the famous one-hole golf course, the magazine called Sport, “one of the most dangerous gold courses in the world.” Next is the scene where everything takes place. On each side of the border is a large three-story visitors’ center. Steps lead down to four blue-storey structures that cross the border and is known as a meeting place for officials from both sides. On the side of the South Korean soldiers are decorative, also wearing sunglasses are dressed. They stand at the corners of the blue building in the so-called ROK (Republic of Korea) ready position, a semi-semi-exposed Taekwondo stance. Your appearance will intimidate the north and the reason they are exposed half to cover in the event of an attack have. View of the way, visitors are a lone North Korean soldier stands at the door “Panmungak,” the North Korean visitor center just across the South.

He barely moves, to see only occasionally, through the tourist binoculars. The only other soldier is visible to the officer sitting next to a window inside the building. He is the one to wait responsible for alerting the entire battalion of soldiers on the other side of the building in an emergency. There is an atmosphere of high tension with the military presence and the severity of the local staff created. Tourists are warned not to make eye contact or gestures of any kind. If a tourist waving a North Korean soldier, perhaps a photo that could end up easily take in a Stalinist propaganda publication with a caption like, “begs a glorious patriot Defector from the Korean People’s Army, to save him from imperialist oppression.” The trick is to keep a poker face: no flashing, no smile, no flashing a quick obscene gesture, no way to squint to see if they can crack his stone-cold look. God forbid, cause a harmless movement of a tourist an outbreak of the war.

This wire must refers to the international border between North and South and tourists to cross the border in these buildings. CHECKPOINT 3 and the bridge of NO RETURN
Following the up-close encounter with the North, the bus drives along a dusty road to the third checkpoint On a hill, this is seemingly simple hut is a popular place where you can see, can clear in North Korea itself. Kaesong, a major city in the north, is visible on a clear day along with the North Korean flag pole that extends way up in competition with the flagpole in the south. This spot is quiet and peaceful and seems almost too quiet for so dangerous. The DMZ provides a breath of fresh air and a little excitement to your senses tingle. If you are ever in the area are taking a chance and visit the last barrier that stands between East and West. It is definitely an experience you will never forget.
